The Special Education Task Force was appointed by the CT State Legislature to study the provision and funding of special education in our state.
The Task Force has developed a report with their initial findings.
During these virtual 90 minute sessions, the Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center will summarize the findings and provide you with an opportunity to provide your feedback regarding the report and ANYTHING related to your experiences and input related to special education.
Note that these sessions have overwhelmingly consisted of special education administrators. It is critical that the parent voice be heard as well.
I shared feedback asking that our over-worked special education teachers be provided with administrative assistants to handle their paperwork and to navigate CT-SEDS. I stated that parents were having difficulties getting district permission to have their child’s outside professionals observe the child at school and that Connecticut needs a law comparable to what is in Massachusetts. I also proposed that, rather than continuing to provide short, hit-or-miss professional development related to reading that the state fund adequate professional development for K-3 teachers, reading specialists, and special education teachers in structured literacy (which, to be effective, requires approximately two years of instruction, as well as supervised practicum of about 100 hours). Etc. Bottom line: it’s fine to share whatever input you have!
